that crazy ballyhoo
DeOscarize PAUL LUKAS
BEST ACTOR 1943 – WATCH ON THE RHINE
Where anyone who don’t deserve it just won’t preserve it, if they can’t shine in these times.
It is my belief that Paul Lukas
won the Academy Award for Best Actor 1943 In Watch on the Rhine because the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences were rewarding the role more than the actor. Lukas plays a member of the anti-nazi underground sheltering his American wife and their children in the safe arms of Uncle Sam before he returns to the fight. Like I said, the role rather than the actor whose performance I find dated. Besides, I cannot, in all good conscience dare to DeOscarize Charles Coburn so that Claude Rains could take his rightful place as the true as well as the New Best Supporting Actor 1943,
without correcting a near similar injustice, some might say greater injustice in denying Humphrey Bogart Best Actor 1943 for Casablanca. Can I tell you how many similar conversations I’ve had regarding this over the years. It goes something like, “You mean Humphrey Bogart didn’t win Best Actor for Casablanca?!”.“No”, says I, “No, he didn’t”. “Well who won it, then?”. “Paul Lukas.” “Who?” “Paul Lukas.” “Who the _____ is Paul Lukas?”.
Now choosing Bogie over Lukas is no real stretch. Bogart’s performance still stirs the soul. The heartbreak in his face; the resolution at the end; the banter with Claude Rains. It’s all there. It’s wonderful and if you see the list of nominees I think my point about why Paul Lukas got the award that it bears out.

For me it’s very close between Henry Fonda and Humphrey Bogart and Joel McCrea’s performance in The More The Merrier was his best next to Sullivan’s Travels. However Humphrey Bogart’s performance is a huge factor in making Casablanca a perfect film. Half say it’s Citizen Kane. Half say it’s Casablanca. I used to be on the Citizen Kane side of the fence and I’ve come over to the other side. Lest we forget, these films are hearing The Godfather’s footsteps. At DeOscarize the whole idea is to finally give credit where credit and awards are rightfully due. So, until I hear a compelling reason against this decision, I hereby name:
HUMPHREY BOGART – NEW Best Actor 1943 – Casablanca
Now, what do we do about the African Queen? Hmmmmm. I’m gonna have to think about that. You too! ARE MY EYES REALLY BROWN?
Of course I can see where folks might think I’m wrong. I’m prepared to make my case for DeOscarizing Lukas to give due credit to Humphrey Bogart. Can you make the case to prevent it? Is there someone else you would DeOscarize Lukas for, if anyone? Let’s discuss it.
