that crazy ballyhoo
DeOscarize ELLEN BURSTYN
BEST ACTRESS 1974 – ALICE DOESN’T LIVE HERE ANYMORE
I have every intention of making sure Ellen Burstyn gets an award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, just not the one she actually got it for. I’m sorry, I am loathe to say this about any film by Martin Scorcese
but aside from the opening scene I find that Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore has become a dated film with dated performances. Perhaps it’s the spectre of the television series hanging over it but I watched it last night and the diner scenes have lost their sparkle. I fully intend to DeOscarize Eileen Heckart so that Ellen Burstyn can get the academy’s award for a performance that has withstood the test of time in every way that is her performance in The King of Marvin Gardens, 1972; more on that for another time. For now I’m about to DeOscarize Ellen Burstyn for Best Actress 1974 and I believe there is only one performance that deserved to win Best Actress 1974 and that was the performance given by Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence, directed by her husband John Cassavettes. She is amazing in that film. She had to have pulled that character from very, very deep within her soul. You must see her performance in this film. It will stand the test of time and someday be held up as one of the all time great film performances, like the dissenting opinion in a Supreme Court decision. Gena Rowlands, A Woman Under the Influence gets my vote in my alternate reality called, DeOscarize. There are some other interesting alternatives listed below especially those who I believe were snubbed by the Academy for Best Actress 1974.

Here are some actresses who gave great film performances in 1974 and got summarily snubbed by the academy; especially Goldie Hawn for her performance in Sugarland Express. She should’ve at least been nominated. Also a lesser known performance but worth a look is Jessica Harper’s performances in a film called the Phantom of the Paradise. This is the “Phantom” show that should have been taken to Broadway. There are some excellent songs in that film. Anyway, here are the actresses who got…
