I’m afraid I’m going to have to DeOscarize Paul Scofield for Best Actor 1966. He did win that year. No real controversy. I believe he got it then because he had the part down so well having performed the role on the stage for well over a year. He knew the part backwards and forwards. On the other hand, look at the performance today. It just hasn`t got the juice. Now check out Richard Burton in Who`s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Look at it today. If you can forgive the Black and White, you`ll see a performance that`s still electric. 47 years later, Burton`s performance still sizzles. So, he didn`t get the award for Best Actor, which was especially galling since Elizabeth Taylor won Best Actress that year for the same movie. Hollywood never forgave Burton for seducing ElizabethTaylor during Cleopatra so they blamed him for that movie`s failure. That`s my theory. If you`ve got another one or a better one, let us know. Don`t keep it a secret. So, I intend to figuratively push the DeOscarize button on Paul Scofield and then figuratively push the Richard Burton button, finally giving the Best Actor award to the actor who should have received it then, almost fifty years ago. He deserved it then. I knew it then. I know it now. Let Justice Prevail! Although, as I look at the list below, there were some excellent film performances in 1966.

On the other hand there were some very strong film performances in 1966 that went unrecognized then but no longer. Here’s a list of actors whose performances deserved a nomination, at least if not the award. At last they are recognized NOW. Justice prevails!

Of course I can see where folks might think I’m wrong. I believe I made my case to DeOscarize Paul Scofield. Can you make the case to prevent it? Is there someone else you would DeOscarize Scofield for? Let’s discuss it.
